It seems to me that if one bank opens a new branch somewhere, the others just follow suit regardless if it makes economic sense or not. Its like a competition.

This is an interesting take on a much-debated issue. Banking has experienced significant changes, especially in the last 20 years with the introduction of new channels. Customers are interacting with banks in new ways, and the industry has to, and is, adapting accordingly. I recently attended the Bank Innovation show in San Francisco and Geoff Knapp from Fiserv provided a unique insight into consumer banking behavior, comparing it to their eating habits. I wrote a blog post based on this idea and I think you'll find it offers a new take on the subject of consumer banking habits:
