The fact that Lloyds' Paul Pester and Virgin's Jayne-Anne Gadhia despise each other from their time fighting over management of Virgin Direct/Money/One Account makes this a story worthy of a TV series/soap opera/comedy of errors. Who thought M&A could be this much fun!

What about Standard Chartered - they have excellent retail expertise in Asia and would add a British alternative -even their brand awareness is now much greater given their sponsorship of Liverpool FC.

I have to agree with Chris that this is not likely to end up as a trade sale for all of the reasons above and more and is far more likely to end up with a floatation and the quicker the better for Lloyds Banking Group as the sooner they get it away the less likelihood that the ICB can add more branches to the good ship Verde.
