Why bother with a currency? In the old days, goods or services are directly exchanged for other goods or services, without the use of money. I would go for barter exchange.

I believe the biggest advantages the alternatives to the established currencies offer is the fact that if you pay in these “currencies” you don’t have to pay any form of tax – neither income tax nor sales-tax nor value-added-tax.
Of course this is a huge benefit for the users of the currencies, but not for the society as a whole.

There is one thriving down in Devon - the Totnes pound. It is widely used and much loved by the locals. Sure they need their normal pounds for utility bills and the like but many almost see Sterling as a secondary currency. It's simple, it's about keeping money in your local economy and keeping that economy and its community strong - that way you have a buffer against what is happening elsewhere. They are very proud of it.
